Learning And Development

Leadership Development Programme
Whether you're a volunteer looking to become a leader, or an existing leader looking to refresh and build your skills, you'll find a learning opportunity that's right for you. At Girlguiding there are lots of leadership roles for you, no matter what your experience.
The leader development programme, sometimes referred to as the LDP, is a self-led, flexible learning journey for anyone who wants to become a Girlguiding leader. It has replaced the leadership qualification, often called the LQ, which was phased out in September 2023.
Mentor Training
A mentor does not need to be a fountain of all knowledge - just a friendly face who has achieved a Girlguiding qualification and would like to help others do the same!
Here are some examples of how you might be able to help.
If you're a leader - other leaders need support to complete their leadership qualification. Could you help them by talking through how you achieved yours?
If you hold an outdoor qualification - anyone working towards an outdoor qualification will be supported by a mentor. Could you help show them the ropes?
If you're a commissioner - commissioners who are starting our induction programme need the support of another commissioner. Could you share your experience and explain how you've managed different challenges during your role?

First Response

What will I learn?
Gain simple life-saving first aid skills that are relevant to your role.
Develop the confidence and skills required to cope with emergency and first aid situations.
Understand how to manage these emergencies.
What you need to do
To fully complete the 1st response training, you need to:
Attend a local training session.
Complete the e-learning.
Both parts of the training must be completed to be considered a Girlguiding first aider.
Safer Guiding
What Is Safer Guiding?
Safer guiding is our safeguarding training and will help you to:
Understand your role in safeguarding and what to do.
Learn about our approach to health and safety and your responsibilities.
Find out all about data protection and what you need to do.
Include everyone.
There are 2 types of safer guiding training – safer guiding and safer guiding basics. The one you’ll do will be based on your role.
For Anyone Volunteering With Girls
If you have any contact with girls you’ll need to do the safer guiding course. This has 4 topics and replaces a safe space levels 1, 2 and 3.
This e-learning takes about 3 hours and is divided into smaller modules. It’s designed for you to dip in and out of and it’ll save your progress along the way. We wouldn’t recommend completing this all in one go but make sure you allow plenty of time to complete it before your deadline.
At the end of each of the 4 topics there's a quiz for you to do. You must pass each quiz to complete the course.
If you prefer to complete a trainer-led session instead of the e-learning, you can book this through the learning platform. These sessions take around 4-5 hours.
For those without direct contact with girls
You'll need to do safer guiding basics - a shorter version of the safer guiding training. It's required instead for a small number of non-girl-facing roles.
This takes around 45 minutes to complete and there's no quiz attached to it.
You can complete the training on the learning platform.
Programme Training

Get to grips with core elements of our programme.
We want you to feel confident about delivering our programme. This range of training opportunities will tell you all you need to know. They cover themes, awards, interest badges, skills builders and more.
The training is designed to be flexible so that it fits into your busy guiding lives. There are a range of modules for you to choose from. You don’t need to do all these modules - instead you can pick and mix the ones that best suit your needs.
You can choose whether you do the modules online as e-learning, or go to in-person training sessions with our experienced trainers. We also have a calendar of webinars so you can learn about the programme in real time with a Girlguiding trainer, and ask questions from the comfort of your own home. You could even do a combination of them all. The choice is yours!
In-person - To attend an in-person training session find out what your area has scheduled as you normally would.
Webinar - To attend a webinar, which is a live event online, check the upcoming sessions on our learning platform and book for a time that works for you. Webinars are booked on a first come, first served basis so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.
e-learning - To access the programme e-learning, head to the learning platform
